What is Steamboat Springs?
A city in the rocky mountains, around 3 hours drive outside of Denver, roughly 150 miles and you can reach it via the U.S. Highway 40 and Rabbit ear pass, make sure to be comfortable driving in winter conditions.
Why should I go there?
Because Steamboat Springs has a lot to offer! There’s plenty of hot springs in the area and multiple ski resorts as well as Howelsen Hill with one of the only ski jumping complexes in the US. You can also participate in quite a few other winter outdoor activities, there’s options starting from sledding, skiing and snowboarding to hiking, cross country, snowmobiles, rock climbing, rafting and horseback riding.
Can I only go in winter?
Absolutely not! It’s gorgeous during summer as well and you can still enjoy most of the outdoorsy things there!

Can I Ski there?
Heck yeah! The Howelsen Ski Area offers a wide variety of slopes and the season runs from November to March. They get around 470cm or 185” of snow each year so you get to enjoy some fresh powder during that time as well!
I don’t own Skis, what do I do?
Don’t worry, there are multiple stores like Christy Sports where you can get everything you need! You can basically get everything right at the foot of the hill on Gondola Square.
Isn’t Skiing really expensive?
Kinda. This is not the cheapest resort either. A lift ticket for an adult is $49 a day and you could also get a season ticket for around $290 or $230 if you have proof of being an active university student. On Sundays you get free access to the lift and the Nordic trails.
Is there something else to do?
Yes!! Lincoln Ave offers a plethora of restaurants, bars, shops and small local businesses. Check out this part to read more!
How about hotels?
I have only stayed in my host family’s condo but there are a bunch of hotels, AirBnB’s and Motels around the area.
Should I go there if I don’t like the outdoors?
Well… I wouldn’t particularly recommend it. Colorado is a very outdoorsy state and has a lot to offer. If you’re driving into the mountains make sure to read up on it a bit (good job btw) and make sure that you plan according to your preferences. If you can’t imagine anything worse than hanging out in a cabin, hiking or skiing and having a local beer, maybe this is not the right vacation for you.

How long should I stay?
Up to you! The drive is a bit further so maybe not only for the afternoon. But if you have something specific in mind it can be a very nice day trip out of Denver. If you want to ski, take more time and enjoy it properly.
